Southampton, PA

Southampton is a great place to live

History

Southampton, PA is named after Southampton, England. In 1685 Southampton, Pennsylvania was recognized as a township. The original purchasers of the land were: John Luff, John Martin, Robert Pressmore, Richard Wood, John Jones, Mark Betres, John Swift, Enoch Flowers, Joseph Jones, Thomas Groom, Robert Marsh, Thomas Hould and John Gilbert. In 1929 the township was divided into Upper and Lower Southampton.

Southampton stretches between Pennypack and Neshaminy Creeks. It was said that William Penn purchased the land by trading commodities with the local Indians to maintain a peaceful co-existence. The deed was signed on June 23, 1683 by Lenni-Lenape Chieft Tamanend.

Quakers who were avoiding religious persecution, joined with members of the Pennypack Baptist Church and formed Southampton Baptist Church in 1746. In the 1700’s, Dutch colonist migrated south from New York. Southampton is rich in history and contains graves of soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, farming was the main career for most Southampton residents. They constructed roads to connect farms to mills, to markets and churches. Horse and wagon were used to transport produce to the city. They would get there by using what is known as Second Street Pike. In 1870, Southamptonville’s name was shortened to Southampton and shops started opening up along Second Street Pike.

In the 19th century, public education began. One of the first school buildings built in Southampton can still be seen today on the South side of Street Road next to the Dairy Queen.

In the 20th century, electric and telephone utilities were installed, Street Road was widened, and overpass railroads were constructed.

Southampton in the 21st century is a quiet township with residents from all different backgrounds. You can find residents to be friendly, kind and hardworking. On any given day, you will find people walking their dogs, babies or enjoying a walk by themselves.

Things to Do

Southampton Days – Southampton Days is one of the biggest events in the community. Usually, every year over the Fourth of July, the town comes together to celebrate. Southampton Days is known for their spectacular fireworks display and is one of the best displays in Bucks County. Southampton Days also includes a fair, local vendors, talent shows, and live entertainment. There is a parade that is widely attended.

Mad Golfer Golf Club – The Mad Golfer Golf Club offers a driving range and mini golf. The driving range has a total of 50 stalls with the majority of them lit and covered. Six stalls are heated as well, and golf training is available. If you have little ones or you want to do something with a group, maybe mini golf is more your speed. Check out the very affordable mini golf course at the Mad Golfer Golf Club. Don’t forget to also get some ice cream at Dairy Queen if you visit in the Spring or Summer!

Pike Lane Bowling – Can be found on Second Street Pike in Southampton. Pike Lanes features 12 lanes that can be rented for private parties or open bowling. There are multiple leagues running at any given time. Pike Lane is a great place to celebrate birthday parties or just get together with a few friends. Check out their site.

Southampton Parks and Recreation offers many activities and things to do throughout the year. There are programs for Tots, Youth, Teens and Adults. Also notable to mention are the local parks such as Tamanend park, Veterans Field and Willi Schaefer Athletic Complex.

Local Restaurants and Bars

Are you in the mood for some frozen drinks or some really tasty Mexican food? If so, Las Margaritas is a local favorite and hot spot. Get there early because the parking lot is packed on Fridays and weekends. Many people go to Las Margaritas for happy hour and drinks, but the food is just as good. They give you such generous portions that I don’t think I’ve personally ever finished a meal! The chips and salsa before the meal will do you in, but my personal go-to is the pick three. All their food is amazing.

Blue Sage is one of the best vegan restaurants in the area. People come from all over to enjoy this amazing cuisine. With tons of five-star reviews, Blue Sage is a great option for Southampton dining.

Iron Oven is a newer restaurant on the Street Road and was where the once popular Kenny’s resided. Iron Oven opened late in 2017 and has a great selection of drinks and food. Their pizza is delicious, and the cheesesteaks are always over-flowing with meat. They also have successfully made gluten free meals with many options.

Steam Pub is another town favorite with excellent choices. When Kenny’s shut down, the party moved to Steam. You can usually find a DJ on Friday nights and occasionally live music. If you are over the age of 30, you’ll probably want to get out of there before 9pm on a Friday. The sandwiches are really good, but if you want something amazingly good, try the pulled-pork mac and cheese. Steam also offers a nice spread for parties and gatherings.

Maggios is another hot spot in Southampton. They offer an excellent happy hour but get there early as it gets packed. They also have large banquet rooms which are perfect for any celebratory occasion.

General Davis, I can honestly say I never been to the General before, but I did notice that they built an awesome patio. If you are looking for more of a bar than a restaurant, I think this is the place to go.

Southampton is a great place to live with thriving businesses and good hardworking people. Southampton is close to major highways like Route 1, I-95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which makes commuting easy. Philadelphia is a quick 45-minute ride up I-95, and the Jersey beaches can be reached within 2 hours. There are also many other attractions within that two-hour range such as Sesame Place, Six Flags, and many historical sites. It’s almost the perfect in-between of fast city life and small-town living. It can get congested with traffic from time to time, but it’s tolerable. Other local surrounding towns like Warminster, Warrington, Huntingdon Valley, Newtown, Richboro and Churchville, provide similar feels but have their own twist. The schools, businesses and people make Southampton a desirable place to live.
